Riverina, 1938
Length: 7.5m, Beam: 2.5m, Draft: 0.6m
Propulsion: Sail
Construction: Timber
Owner: Andrew Vardy
The Riverina was constructed from material salvaged from the SS Riverina that ran aground close to Gabo Island in 1928. She was built from the teak decking that was most likely old growth forest from the India subcontinent. The timber lay in a Paynesville backyard for 10 years before the Day Brothers were commissioned to build a Paynesville fishing boat approx. 1938.
She has been through a few changes, originally a Gaff Rig, then converted to inboard with cabin. At some point after this the hard cabin was removed.
It was re-purchased back into the family by my brother and myself in 2007, since we had fond memories of her whilst holidaying as kids on Raymond Island. We have since replaced the engine and had extensive renovations done on the deck that will allow her to gracefully sail the Lakes for at least a further 50 years
